Most ladies can testify that birth is their most painful life experience re physical agony. However, over two hundred Russian MDs, practicing the Buteyko self-oxygenation breathing therapy, found that higher body oxygenation guarantees painless childbirth.
The Buteyko breathing method is officially authorized, by the Russian Ministry of Health, holistic medical treatment to treat coronary disease and asthma. It was discovered in the 1960s by Russian MD and PhD Konstantin Buteyko, who was a manager of the respiratory laboratory in Novosibirsk.

Breathing patterns, as they disclosed, is the main factor that defines body oxygen stores. This law of breathing is in complete agreement with hundreds of medical studies : prolonged hyperventilation (fast and deep breathing pattern) reduces tissue oxygen levels of all critical organs, including the brain, heart, liver, kidneys, etc.
Let's review how oxygenation and breathing in different groups of people and how this law works. nowadays healthy people have about 20-30 s of oxygen in their bodies ( after exhale and with no stress ). Their breathing is hard to see or hear. It is light and relaxed.
Sick folks with coronary disease, diabetes, cancer, and plenty of other chronic conditions have loud and heaving breathing (chest movements) with about 10-20 s of oxygen depending on severity of their illness.
Their breathing is very big and heavy as one can easily observe in hospitals.
The objective of the Buteyko respiring system is to have over 60 s of oxygen 24/7.
How does this relate to child delivery? Superior oxygenation of muscle cells eliminates their spasm and guarantees their relaxed state and oxygen-saturated mitochondria for fast and efficient child delivery so that the pregnant lady does not have to struggle for hours from unbearable pain.
Among the main items that increase body oxygen levels ( or makes breathing at rest extraordinarily light and easy ) are:
- physical activity with strictly nasal respiring ( out and out) for over 2 hours per day;
- no longer sleeping on one's back;
- upright posture;
and many others.
